Through the Spyglass - Asset Efficiency Metrics

Welcome to Through the Spyglass! In this series, we preview some of the cutting-edge features coming to Helm CONNECT and invite you to share your thoughts with us. In this edition, we’ll examine some powerful new tools we’re designing for Helm CONNECT that will transform how you manage and monitor your assets: Asset Efficiency Metrics.

*Development is always a work in progress. We can’t guarantee that the ideas presented in this series will be included in future updates as priorities and resources are always subject to change.

Managing your assets efficiently is crucial to your business, and having clear insights into their performance can make all the difference. That’s why we’ve categorized all our customers’ activities and are now developing key performance indicators (KPIs) and visualizations to help answer two essential questions: Are my assets operational? Are they being used effectively?

We’re building Availability and Utilization Tracking tools that will give you a quick and comprehensive view of your assets’ operational status. At any given moment, you’ll be able to see exactly how much of your fleet is up and running. We want you to be able to track trends in availability and downtime, enabling you to identify patterns and improve your asset management strategy. Think of a Utilization Tracking tool as a step tracker for your assets. It will monitor how your assets are being used, comparing working hours, running time, and idle periods against available time. It will provide a clear view of daily performance and build a comprehensive picture of usage trends over time.

The Asset Efficiency Score will aggregate your asset’s availability and utilization into a single, easy-to-understand number. This powerful tool will simplify decision-making by providing a clear snapshot of overall asset performance. If your score is lower than expected, you’ll know at a glance whether to investigate utilization, availability, or both. It will be an intuitive way to ensure your assets are not only operational but also being used to their full potential.

But we won’t stop there. The Asset Efficiency Score won’t just provide valuable insights for individual assets—it could be applied across fleets, ports, divisions, and even your entire company. For example, you could calculate an efficiency score for a port based on the performance of all assets assigned to it, providing valuable benchmarks and insights across different segments of your operation. This level of transparency will help you make more informed decisions and continuously improve asset utilization.

We’re currently refining these concepts and building an initial Analytics dashboard with the help of beta testers. If you’re interested in learning more about these tools and getting involved with their development, please reach out to me at liam.cameron@helmoperations.com.
